Dr. James Harynuk

Analytical Chemistry

Dr. James Harynuk is a professor at the University of Alberta in the Department of Chemistry. He had completed his undergraduate degree in Environmental Chemistry from the University of Waterloo, and then enrolled in the PhD program at the University of Waterloo, studying analytical chemistry. After completing his PhD, he studied in Melbourne, Australia for 1.5 years, before returning to Canada. After a brief stint working as an analytical chemist for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (Ottawa), Dr. Harynuk joined the University of Alberta as a faculty member in 2007. In Dr. Harynuk’s laboratory, they study methods to separate complex mixtures of small organic molecules so that they can then measure their abundances and identify them. Currently the research is focused on multidimensional gas-phase separations utilizing comprehensive multidimensional gas chromatography, (GCЧGC), heart-cut (targeted) multidimensional GC (GC-GC), as well as advanced data handling tools for GCЧGC and ones that permit GCЧMS approaches using conventional GC-MS instrumentation. Their work is applied in a diverse number of fields, from forensics to health, from environmental analysis to agriculture.
